Sowing the seeds of life – Worke's story
Worke lives in Afar, a hot, arid region of Ethiopia. In the past, if the rains failed, Worke risked losing her crops, her animals and any hope for her children's future. Now, thanks to a FARM-Africa project in her village, Worke's outlook is more certain.
With our help, her community learned to irrigate their fields from the local river. We also gave Worke a seed starter kit with hardy new crop varieties that thrive in drier ground. Now, Worke's yields are high enough to sell some of her crops and pay for her children to go to school.

How Worknesh's chickens changed her family's lives
Before FARM-Africa came to her village, in Chilimo, Ethiopia, Worknesh and her husband worked hard on their tiny plot of land but still they could not grow enough food to feed their children.
Thanks to one of our poultry projects, Worknesh was given a brood of chicks to help her family survive. She cross-bred the chickens to make them hardier and now they provide her family with plenty of protein-rich eggs to eat. She even has some left over to sell and has managed to make improvements to the family home.

Harvest time – and Martha's village is a hive of activity
Martha lives in Kitui, Kenya. The overuse of the nearby forest means it is now impossible for her to earn a living in the traditional way, by making charcoal from trees.
Thanks to a FARM-Africa project in her village, Martha has learnt how to keep bees. She received equipment, including hives and smokers, which encourage the bees to leave their hives so honey can be harvested. Now Martha produces enough honey to sell and provide a crucial income for her family. Plus, this vital natural resource can recover from years of over use.

Gabriel's crops are big and strong thanks to a hot new ingredient
Money is scarce in Mbale district of eastern Uganda, where Gabriel lives. Like many, Gabriel relies on his land to survive and life is hard for him. To make matters worse, the crops he does manage to grow in the dry earth are often ruined by pests.
But thanks to FARM-Africa's agricultural training work in the Mbale area, he now knows how to prevent insects eating his valuable crops. Part of Gabriel's training involved using fermented cow's urine as a natural pesticide. Thanks to his newly acquired farming knowledge, Gabriel now harvests enough crops to feed his family.

Marietta's sweet honey can feed her family
Marietta lives on the edge of the Nou Forest in Tanzania. She used to earn a pittance collecting firewood, which she burnt to make charcoal and then sold. But after years of logging, the forest is under threat, leaving Marietta with no chance of providing for her children.
When FARM-Africa arrived to train people in beekeeping, Marietta was very keen to begin a new way of life that also lets the local forest replenish. Now, thanks to our project and her hard work, Marietta can feed and clothe her children, as well as sending them to school – all through selling her honey to local people.

Stephen brews up a better future for his family
Before FARM-Africa arrived in his area, Stephen, like many farmers in Tanzania, struggled to support his family. His crop yields were very low and sometimes the whole family went hungry.
Thankfully, Stephen received high-yielding banana plantlets as part of a FARM-Africa project in his village. Now, he reaps more than enough sweet bananas to ensure his family are always healthy. So, Stephen sells his extra bananas to the local brewery to make banana beer, which is very popular in the cities.

No kidding – Joyce's goats have changed life for her family
The people of Sironko District in Uganda are desperately poor. Like nine out of ten families there, Joyce relied on her land to survive but could not grow enough food to keep her children healthy.
That has all changed thanks to goats from FARM-Africa. Joyce received two goats when we began working in her area. As part of our project, she bred them with Toggenburgs – a type of goat that gives lots of milk. Now their offspring provide milk each day for her family to drink. She even sells the manure they produce to neighbours to pay her children's school fees.

Trained to care – Jonah keeps his community's animals healthy
Like so many of Kenya's coffee farmers, Jonah could not make enough money to support his family. Plummeting coffee prices meant his family often went without, despite working hard as a labourer to supplement his income.
Now, thanks to our projects in his area, Jonah has received the training and equipment to become a village vet. He earns a living by treating animals in his area for a small fee. Jonah uses the money he receives to pay his children's school fees and can at last provide three meals a day for his family.

Rebekah has learned the skills to be a successful farmer
Like many children in Tanzania, when Rebekah grows up, she will probably become a farmer, relying on the land to survive. However, in the drier areas of Babati, where Rebekah lives, growing enough food is not easy.
Now, thanks to our education projects there, Rebekah and her classmates are learning farming techniques to help them in the future. We gave Rebekah's school tree seedlings and training in how to look after them. Now, the children are gaining knowledge that will stand them in good stead for years to come. And they also get to eat the crops they grow for a healthy school lunch.

Mrs Bokayo's camel has carried her whole family a long way
Mrs Bokayo lives in a dry part of Northern Kenya. Before FARM-Africa came to her area, she struggled to provide enough food for her children.
Thanks to our women's group in her village, Mrs Bokayo received a camel that has transformed life for her family. This amazing animal provides nutritious milk, even in times of drought and they can sell what they don't need to buy food, schoolbooks or medicine.

Where there's a well, there's a way of life for farmers like Joseph
Like many families in Southern Sudan, Joseph's was forced to flee their land when war broke out. When the war was over, he returned to his land with nothing. Without a regular source of water, he had no chance of irrigating his land or growing enough food for his family.
Things changed for Joseph when he was chosen to represent his community in our shallow well training scheme. He learned how to locate underground water sources and build his own well. Today he is the proud owner of a shallow well that provides safe, clean water for his family and ensures his land is fertile.
