General enquiries

How do FARM-Africa PRESENTS work?
When you buy someone a present using our scheme, you can email them a link to a film direct from one of our projects, or a link to a personalised e-card with a beautiful photo illustrating our work. The film will end with a personalised message from you to your friend or loved one. If your friend doesn't have Internet access, we can post a photo gift pack to them, at a small extra cost (£3.96).

When will my PRESENTS be delivered?
If your FARM-Africa PRESENTS is a film or e-card, it will be sent as a link in an email on the date you specify when you personalise your gift. If you choose to send a photo gift pack, it will be delivered within 5 working days of your purchase.

How will I know if my gift has been delivered?
FARM-Africa makes every effort ensure that your gift is dispatched promptly and arrives with the chosen recipient as near as possible to your specified delivery date. However, in unlikely events such as an incorrect email address being supplied or server problems beyond our control, we cannot guarantee delivery date, so we advise you to contact the gift recipient and make sure their gift has arrived. Should there be any further problems, please contact our Supporter Services Team or phone us on 020 7430 0440 and we'll be happy to help you (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

How long will my film be available to view?
Your film or e-card does not have an expiry date, however there may be times when you cannot access it due to web site maintenance or server errors beyond our control.

What does my donation pay for?
Your donations are used throughout FARM-Africa's work, wherever the need is greatest. This way, you can be sure your support makes the maximum difference in helping to transform lives, permanently. Your donation may be used to help provide livestock, seeds, training or other support, including paying for essential running costs, for projects tailored specifically to the needs of a local African community. Our projects are based in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Southern Sudan. Whether improving small-scale dairy goat farming, working to resolve conflict with pastoral communities or developing new roles for villagers to manage forests, we know that with even a little assistance, African farmers can dramatically improve their own well-being.

Can I Gift Aid my donation?
Yes, you can, if you are a UK taxpayer. You can Gift Aid your donation as you complete the payment page on the site. Alternatively, you can make a Gift Aid declaration over the telephone or through the post.

How do I contact someone to talk about my purchase?
Please contact our Supporter Services Team or phone us on 020 7430 0440 and we'll be happy to help you (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

How much money goes on administration?
Money raised from the FARM-Africa PRESENTS donations is used to support all FARM-Africa projects, to ensure that help can be provided where it is needed most. This includes vital costs in Africa (such as transport and staff training) and in the UK (such as writing up our projects so that other charities can benefit from our experience). Such costs – especially expert staff – are vital for us to help the farmers we work with.

Ensuring that our work is financially and professionally accountable and sustainable (both to our donors and our beneficiaries) costs money, just as our projects on the ground do. These costs are integral to the work that we carry out. We are not an extravagant organisation and consequently we only spend around 2.5% of our income on Governance.

Want to comment on your experience of using FARM-Africa PRESENTS?
We are really interested to hear any of your comments on the site and how we can improve our service to you. Please contact our Supporter Services Team or phone us on 020 7430 0440, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Why does FARM-Africa work where it does?
FARM-Africa was established in Kenya in 1985 and its first project was the 1986 Kenya Pastoralist Development Project. From this point, we expanded our work to neighbouring countries: Ethiopia in the north and Tanzania in the south, often in partnership with AMREF.

FARM-Africa started work in South Africa in 1992, Uganda in 2003 and more recently Southern Sudan in 2005.

What does the 'F.A.R.M.' in FARM-Africa stand for?
It stands for Food and Agricultural Research Management, reflecting our aim to research better agricultural and natural resource practices in partnership with rural communities.

How is FARM-Africa funded
FARM-Africa receives funding through a variety of sources, including statutory donors, the general public, trusts and major donors. Sources of its charitable income include:

  • Trusts, notably The Rockefeller Foundation and The Gatsby Charitable Foundation
  • Companies
  • Individual donations from members of the public
  • Donations from churches
  • Schools
  • Government International Development Departments (particularly the UK, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden and USA)
  • European Commission
  • International charities including Ethiopia Aid, Christian Aid, the Dutch agencies, NOVIB (a member of Oxfam International), Cordaid and German Agro Action
  • The Community Fund and Comic Relief

How does FARM-Africa spend its money?
In 2006, we generated an income of over £8million – 71.5% of expenditure was spent directly on our programmes, with the remaining 28.5% being spent on governance and generating funds.

Can I work for/volunteer for FARM-Africa?
The London office recruits staff for posts in Britain and senior posts in Africa. Other in-country posts in Africa are recruited locally. When recruiting staff, full job details will be posted on our website, as well as advertising in the mainstream press. We also make use of the BOND network to advertise any new positions.

FARM-Africa occasionally works with volunteers in the London office and any such opportunities will be posted on the website. However we are unable to respond to unsolicited applications.

Can FARM-Africa provide funding for my project?
FARM-Africa is not a donor agency. As a small non-funding organisation, we need all the money raised for our own programmes in East and South Africa. However, the one exception to this is The Maendeleo Agricultural Technology Fund, which we manage and which provides small grants to agricultural projects in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Further information is available at www.maendeleo-atf.org.
